Jurassic Frock

Like lots of kids, I went through a dinosaur phase when I was little. Unlike most adults, I went through another as a grown-up. Since I haven't outgrown it yet (and probably won't), clearly I had to have this dress.

What I'm wearing: dress from Modcloth , thrifted Pour la Victoire wedges , necklace from a clothing swap, rhinestone sunglasses from Avalon Exchange .

I paired it with an enormous necklace and purple suede wedge heels because I get great pleasure from ignoring the conventional styling tip that "less is more." And since there's nothing banning dinosaur-prints in my work dress code, I tossed a blazer on over it and proudly sported this getup to the office.

YOU GUYS! Not only does this dress have dinosaurs, but it has pockets! POCKETS! It's like the holy grail of dresses.

I ordered it online just before leaving town for vacation, so it was like having a "welcome back present" waiting for me when I got home. Speaking of vacation, I'll be posting pics and links to the awesome places we visited on our trip to the Smoky Mountains and Nashville, so check back soon for that.

" T-rex? You've got a T-rex?! " Why, yes. Yes, I do. Right on my crotch.

And here's me doing my best Chris Pratt in Jurassic World impression.

My Current Obsessions:

Listening: "Dinosaur, Dinosaur " by CSS. This song from Yo Gabba Gabba is technically for kids. I don't even care. It's so good.

Playing: Warning! Monument Valley is highly addictive. Recommended to me by a friend for its gorgeous scenery and problem-solving fun, I plowed through the entire game in two sittings while on vacation.

Reading: Sort of like X-Men if they'd been created by Neil Gaiman and set in war-torn 1940s London, "Hollow City" by Ransom Riggs, is the second novel in the Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children series. Actual vintage photography inspired the bizarre characters and the story, and is interspersed throughout the book. I'm really looking forward to the third book's release this fall.

Drinking: I'm still on a gin kick, but this time it's lavender infused gin and tonics. To make lavender-infused gin, add 1 tablespoon of food grade lavender buds per cup of gin. Leave it overnight in a sealed jar, strain out the buds with a coffee filter, and get drunk!

Dress Resurrection

Don't get me wrong — I love summer. But I find summer fashion to be less than inspiring. Sure, it's easy. Toss on a dress, add some sandals and BOOM! You're ready to go. But that's just too easy. I like the options and layering that slightly cooler weather offers. And since summer finally decided to grace Cleveland with hot temps, it's been too warm for this sweaty gal to deviate much from the dress + sandals equation.

Fun fact: boyfriend jeans just fit like skinnies on muscular legs. What I'm wearing: dress worn as jacket by Forever 21 , white boyfriend jeans by Kut from the Kloth, black shirt by H&M , thrifted leather belt, gladiator sandals from Target , Timex Weekender watch.

Between that and a schedule packed with bike rides, Frisbee games, beach trips and other activities necessitating tanks, shorts and tennis shoes, I haven't been wearing anything particularly interesting to post here.

Bonus: The dress fans out behind me like a cape when I walk. Any excuse to wear something cape-like to work is a win.

And then inspiration struck. This shirtdress was languishing in my to-donate pile for some time, but I just couldn't bare to part with it. It's cute, but I've put on a couple pounds and it no longer fits… as a dress. But it makes a fab jacket, no? While I'll wear it over a mini dress with tights or leather pants in the fall, a streamlined silhouette and restrained color palette keep it laid-back and lightweight for work. I particularly like how the straps on the gladiator sandals echo the graphic nature of the dress too.

And while I matched my rings (both vintage) to the color scheme, mismatched earrings have been my jam this summer. The stud is from Target, the bar ear crawler from Baublebar .

It seems silly, but this outfit sort of jumpstarted my sartorial inspiration. I'll continue to enjoy my summer, but I'm not-so-secretly counting the days until it's time to bust out with fall looks.

My current obsessions:

Wearing: A classic bandana tied around my neck a la Leandra Medine (Shocker, right?) Seriously, they look cool as hell with pretty much anything and are $1 at the craft store.

Watching: I'm a bit late to the party, but I finally started watching Orange is the New Black and it's awesome. Believe the hype.

Drinking: My go-to summer cocktail has been a lower-calorie and frankly, better-tasting spin on your classic gin and tonic. Add 1 shot of gin to a tumbler of ice and top with any flavor of La Croix and a lime wedge.

Listening: Rancid radio on Pandora. It's like the soundtrack to late-high school summers spent getting sunburned at Warped Tour.
